Meg Johnson, an Emmerdale legend, died on July 2, 2023, at 86, following a lengthy struggle with dementia.
Meg’s death came four months before losing her beloved husband, Charles Foster, who served as an announcer for ITV Granada.
Before joining the Emmerdale cast, Johnson enjoyed multiple seasons as Brigid McKenna in the Channel 4 serial drama Brookside.
Meg played Eunice Gee on ITV’s Coronation Street in the early 1980s, a role she briefly resurrected in 1999.
The versatile actress was also a Victoria Wood As Seen On TV cast member. Likewise, she shared screens with late comedian Dame Julie Walters and Celia Imrie.
In 1997, Johnson joined the original company of the London Revival of Chicago, where she played prison warder Matron Mama Morton for nearly a year.

Inside the Obituary of Meg Johnson
The loss of “kind and wonderful” Meg Johnson was made public by her family, talent agency Jorg Betts Associates, with the ITV program in a joint declaration.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce that actress Meg Johnson passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by her family.
“Meg was a kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye. Meg’s outstanding career ended with playing Pearl Ladderbanks in Emmerdale in 2003.
“Meg had dementia for the last few years but battled on personally and professionally regardless. The actress will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”
Many heartbroken fans came to pay their respects to the actress, with one individual commenting on Twitter:
“RIP Meg, she was a wonderful actress and was fabulous as Pearl. Always glamorous and always had heart. Lovely lady, my thoughts are with her family.”
Tributes to the actress also flooded in from fans on social media following the news of her death.
While an astonishing actress Gemma Oaten – who starred in the soap opera with Meg – wrote on Twitter:
“Sending so much love to the @emmerdale family and family of the late and great Meg Johnson.”
One fan said he loved her on Emmerdale in the classic episodes. Another said that the heartbreaking news made him think of Meg’s family and friends at this sad time.
A third person also contributed his sentiments, saying it is so heartbreaking he loved her in Emmerdale as Peal.
