The only child of Joan O’Neill, a secretary and personal assistant who has been singing in bands since she was 14 years old, and Alan Chisholm, a fitter at the Otis Elevator Company, Melanie Jayne Chisholm was born on January 12, 1974, in Whiston, Lancashire.
Chisholm’s parents wed in 1971 and divorced when she was four years old. When Chisholm was six years old, her mother remarried and had more kids, one of which is racing driver Paul O’Neill.
She was raised in Widnes, Cheshire, and went to Fairfield High School and Brookvale Junior School in the neighborhood of Runcorn.
Following graduation from high school, she enrolled at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in London to pursue a singing, dancing, and musical theater diploma.
