Ozil, a professional footballer from Germany, is the recipient of the most German Player of the Year honors. 

At age 20, he made his senior debut for the German national team in 2009 and participated in five critical competitions. He led the assist charts at the UEFA Euro 2012 and the FIFA World Cup 2010, helping Germany twice to the semifinals.

Ozil, who assisted Germany in winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup, announced his retirement from international play in 2018, blaming the German Football Association (DFB) and German media for their alleged treatment of him unfairly.

Mesut Ozil Complained About Discrimination In German Squad

Mesut Ozil has declared his impending retirement from international football, which he attributes to unfair prejudice resulting from his meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, in May.

The German team that was eliminated from the World Cup in Russia at the group stage included Ozil, who received harsh criticism for his play and his meeting with Erdoan, who has been charged with violating human rights and has been vocal against German politics.
