Mohsen Shekari Death: Iranians Facing Death Penalty Over Protests
Shekari participated in a demonstration against Mahsa Amini’s passing on September 25, 2022, in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
Iranian Police claimed that he used a machete to injure a member of the Basij militia, which was called in to put an end to the protests, although not fatally, while blocking or closing off Sattar Khan Street, a major thoroughfare in Tehran.
The injury required 13 stitches to be placed in the militiaman’s left shoulder. After his execution, Shekari was charged with being a “rioter,” according to the Mizan news agency of the Iranian court.
Shekari admitted that a buddy had bribed him to attack a Police officer in exchange for his attendance at the protests.
On November 1, 2022, Judge Abolqasem Salavati presided over Shekari’s trial.
Shekari was found guilty of moharebeh, or “enmity against God,” under Sharia, which entails an immediate death sentence, and drawing a weapon “with the goal of killing, inciting panic, and upsetting the order and security of society.”
The judge could have given Shekari a shorter penalty, such as deportation, but he chose not to do so.
Shekari challenged the judgment. On November 20, 2022, the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the decision even though counsel did not assist Shekari at the time of the appeal.
On December 8, 2022, early in the morning, Shekari was hanged. While the execution was taking place, his family waited outside the prison for news of his whereabouts.
Shekari’s execution was confirmed by the Tasnim News Agency, which is linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, but no further details were provided.
Since the Mahsa Amini protests began in September 2022, at least 459 demonstrators have been slain by Police.
Still, Shekari’s execution marked him as the first person acknowledged legally executed for his role in the protests.

The video showed Shekari hobbling down a hallway, and the evidence included clips of him brandishing a knife and seemingly acting out the assault.
Response on Mohsen Shekari Death
Mohsen Shekari Death, according to Sanam Vakil, the deputy director of Chatham House’s Middle East and North Africa Program, signaled to protesters that the “indicating the height of its tolerance.
The system believes that it has been acting with restraint up until this point, but this execution may mark the end of that.”
Similarly, Hossein Ashtari, the head of Iran’s Police force, declared on Thursday that “the Police will not show restraint in dealing with security concerns.”
Mohsen Shekari Death, according to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, left America “appalled.”
Blinken tweeted, “Our message to Iran’s leadership is clear: End this savage repression. “We’ll keep holding the Iranian government responsible,”
Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, tweeted that Shekari “was executed after being perfidiously tried in a hurry for opposing the dictatorship.
The Iranian dictatorship has a never-ending disregard for humankind. However, the threat of death will not weaken the desire for freedom among the populace.”
