The incident involved a homemade aircraft in which Wortman, 72, was a passenger. The pilot, 70-year-old Earl J. Luce Jr. of Brockport, also lost his life in the crash.
The aircraft, described as a fixed-wing, hand-built experimental plane, apparently disintegrated while in flight and subsequently crashed into a pasture behind a residence west of Townline Road in Ridgeway.
Debris from the plane was found scattered throughout the area. The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the crash.
In a news release, Orleans County Sheriff Christopher Bourke stated that the initial investigation suggests that “the wings of the aircraft became detached from the fuselage and fell to the ground in an orchard.”
