This was not the first time that he had been dismissed from the radio station. In 2010, he was fired for allegedly assaulting a female colleague, but he was reinstated in 2016 after a lengthy legal battle.

On December 29, 2023, Mthobeli August posted a cryptic message on his Facebook page, saying “If I had to die right now, I’d die a happy man”.

This was a reference to an interview he gave to Drum magazine in 2016, where he said the same thing after returning to Umhlobo Wenene FM.

He also posted a picture of himself smiling and holding a bottle of alcohol. A few hours later, he was found dead in his home in Johannesburg, with a gunshot wound to his head.

The police confirmed that it was a case of suicide and that they found a suicide note at the scene.

Mthobeli August’s funeral service will be held on January 5, 2024, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. He will be missed by his family, friends, colleagues and fans. 

He was born on June 6, 1977, in Port Elizabeth. He started his career as a radio presenter in 1998 when he joined Umhlobo Wenene FM as a weekend DJ.

He soon became one of the most popular and influential voices on the station, hosting various shows such as Ezanamuhla and BEE Breakfast Eyondlayo Ekuseni.

He was also a mentor to many young and aspiring radio personalities. Mthobeli was not only a radio host, but also a musician, actor, comedian, and MC.

Mthobeli August was married twice and had four children. He divorced his first wife, Noluthando August, in 2012, after she accused him of cheating on her with several women.
