Nigel Lawson was born to Ralph Lawson and Joan Elizabeth Davis on 11 March 1932 in Hampstead, London.

His father owned a tea-trading firm, while his mother came from a family of prosperous stockbrokers.

Lawson’s paternal grandfather, Gustav Leibson, was a merchant from Mitau, now Jelgava in Latvia. Gustav changed his surname from Leibson to Lawson after becoming a British subject in 1911.

He received his degree at Westminster School in London, where his father had also attended. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford, receiving a first-class degree in philosophy, politics, and economics.
