Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and the United States ambassador to the United Nations, was born Nimrata Randhawa to Indian immigrants from Punjab and was given the nickname “Nikki” as a child.

She is reserved about her Sikh heritage and emphasizes her conversion to Christianity. Her race was listed as “white” on her voter registration card in 2001.

The former ambassador’s recent appearance on ABC’s “Journeys of Faith” podcast with Paula Faris has reignited debate over the changing religious representations she has made throughout her political career.

Haley told Faris about Sikhism, the religion she was born in, and how it is a very kind, peaceful, and all-accepting faith. They believe in a single God.

Haley also stated that her parents forced her to attend different churches, such as Methodist, Baptist, and Catholic, advising her to respect everyone and how they pray but to understand that there is one God, but everyone has their path.

In terms of Sikhism, Haley told Faris that she felt God in the room but couldn’t understand it because she didn’t speak the language.

Haley claims to have converted to Christianity when she began dating her husband, Michael Haley, after paying obeisance at Sikhism’s holiest shrine during an economic development trip in 2014.

Haley told Faris that suddenly, there was not only the feeling but also the words she could relate to that meant a lot to her. She went on to say that if she wanted a stronger relationship, she needed something that spoke to her.

The Haleys married in two separate ceremonies, one Sikh and one Christian. Nikki revealed that the Sikh faith respects other religions. It recognizes Jesus and the fact that he was the Son of God.

Haley Randhawa’s ethnicity is Indian American. She was born at Bamberg County Hospital in Bamberg, South Carolina, to immigrant Indian Punjabi Sikh parents.

Her parents, Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa emigrated to the United States from Amritsar District, Punjab, India.

Nikki’s parents relocated to Canada after her Father was offered a scholarship at the University of British Columbia. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1969, her Father relocated his family to South Carolina to work as a professor at Voorhees College, a historically black institution.

Nikki invoked her Indian heritage and claimed that America is not racist, though she later contradicted herself by stating that her family had faced discrimination when she was a child.
