Nupur Sharma Controversy: What Happened?
Nupur Sharma caused controversy in June 2022 when she brought up the Prophet Muhammad during a TV channel debate.
On May 26, 2022, a politician participated in a debate on the Gyanvapi Mosque controversy on the Times Now television network.
During the discussion, Nupur made controversial comments about the age of Muhammad’s wife, Aisha, at the time of their marriage and the consummation of their union.
Several Gulf countries, notably Oman, Qatar & Saudi Arabia, were outraged by her allegedly disrespectful comments and demanded an apology from India.
Later, a politician apologized for her remarks and stated that she hadn’t meant to offend anyone in a message shared on Twitter.
Similarly, a day later, Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of the fact-checking website Alt News, published the video of her remarks on social media to harsh condemnation.
The following day, Times Now removed the program’s video from its YouTube channel.
Not to mention, Sharma had numerous threats to her life from various sources following this occurrence.

Is Nupur Sharma Arrested For Offensive Comment On Prophet Muhammad?
A Police FIR was registered against the Nupur Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson after she reportedly offended religious emotions by making offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate on an English news channel.
Irfan Shaikh, joint secretary of the Mumbai chapter of the right-wing Muslim organization Raza Academy, filed a complaint with the Pydhonie Police Station in South Mumbai.
After that, more FIRs were filed in cities across the nation, including one in Hyderabad filed by legislator Asaduddin Owaisi.
Additionally, on June 3, a Muslim organization in Kanpur called for a bandh (shutdown) to protest the comments; at this time, violence broke out, injuring 40 persons.
In the interim, Sharma’s remarks persisted in being circulated on social media, particularly in the Arab world.
By June 4, all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations and Turkey’s top 10 trending hashtags included insult to Prophet Mohammed.
When Did Nupur Sharma Suspend From The BJP?
On June 5, 2022, Nupur was suspended from the BJP. The BJP strongly denounces assaults on any religious personalities of any religion, read the Party statement.
Sharma then “unconditionally” apologized for her comments, but she emphasized that they were made in response to the “constant abuse and disregard” for the Hindu god Shiva.
Numerous BJP followers, including some BJP MPs, stood by Nupur and denounced the Party and the administration for forsaking her and capitulating to external pressure.
