Richard Berdnik, the sheriff of Passaic County, New Jersey, was found dead inside a restaurant in Clifton, New Jersey, on Tuesday. According to law enforcement officials, it appears he died by suicide.

Longtime Passaic County, New Jersey, Sheriff Richard Berdnik took his own life on Tuesday afternoon.
He shot himself in the bathroom at Toros Turkish Restaurant in Clifton, New Jersey, around 3:30 p.m.Soon after the shot rang out, customers heard the gun go off.
Police and law enforcement rushed to the restaurant following Berdnik’s death.
New Jersey’s top legal official, Attorney General Matthew Platkin, called Berdnik’s suicide an incredibly tragic loss for the state.
Berdnik’s death comes during a difficult time for the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department. The department is planning to lay off 29 sheriff’s officers because the county jail is closing.
Two sheriff’s sergeants and a correctional officer were also arrested last week. They were charged with violating an inmate’s civil rights for allegedly assaulting him and covering it up in 2021.
The inmate had apparently splashed a liquid containing urine on an officer the day before the alleged assault.
On the same day as Berdnik’s death, the owner of Toros Restaurant, Huseyin Bayram, was given a key to the city of Paterson. This was for the restaurant’s charitable work during the pandemic.
The Turkish restaurant, which has locations in Clifton, Paterson, and Montclair, donated 10,000 free meals to people in need and to medical staff.

Berdnik was a retired 30-year-old veteran officer of the Clifton, New Jersey, police force.
Richard H. Berdnik became the 49th Sheriff of Passaic County, New Jersey, on January 1, 2011. He started his second term as sheriff on January 1, 2014.
Before becoming sheriff, Berdnik had a 28-year career with the Clifton, New Jersey, Police Department.
When he retired, he was the commander of the juvenile division and SWAT team. He also held nearly every other position in the department during his career.
Berdnik received many awards for exceptional service and certifications in different law enforcement jobs.
When Berdnik became sheriff, he reviewed all parts of the sheriff’s office to see where improvements could be made. Because of this review, he made operations more efficient.
As sheriff, Berdnik focused on improving technology, training, and overall operations. He helped local police investigate and enforce laws on criminal activity.
Under Berdnik’s leadership, all major divisions of the sheriff’s agency—Police, Corrections, and Courthouse Security—saw basic improvements.
Former Mayor of Clifton, James Anzaldi, expressed great sadness over Berdnik’s passing. Anzaldi called him “a wonderful person” and said, “My heart breaks for his family.”
