Personal Life Of Paul Reubens

Reubens was born Paul Rubenfeld in Peekskill, New York, in 1952. His parents, Judy (Rosen) and Milton Rubenfeld ran a lamp shop in Sarasota, Florida, where he grew up in a Jewish family.

His mother worked in education. His father was an auto salesman who served in the World War II air forces of the United States Army Air Forces and Britain’s Royal Air Force.

After the war, he became one of the original pilots of the Israeli Air Force. He was an Orthodox Jew and one of five Jewish pilots who flew smuggled fighter aircraft against Arab forces.

Luke, a dog trainer, and Abby, a lawyer and board member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, are Reubens’ two younger siblings.

Reubens spent the majority of his formative years in Oneonta, New York. He used to go to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which had its winter headquarters in Sarasota.

The circus environment piqued Reubens’ interest in entertainment, inspiring his later work. He also enjoyed watching old episodes of I Love Lucy, encouraging him to crack others up. 

Reubens begged his father to build a stage for him when he was five years old so that he and his siblings could perform plays on it.
