After enrolling in the Charles Mortimer Race School at the Brands Hatch race track in Kent in 1965, Smart began racing in the second half of the 1960s.
He initially purchased a Bultaco, which proved to be expensive and unreliable, and later rode a variety of machinery in various classes on UK short circuits.
After setting records for Ducati and winning more races, Smart decided to hang up his leathers and stop competing in 1978 so that he could focus on his motorcycle shop, which he eventually divided into three.
After selling the family’s businesses and campground in Kent, he went on to earn his certification as an offshore sailing skipper, formalizing his lifelong pastime.

Paul Smart, a former Grand Prix and Isle of Man TT racer, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at the age of 78.
The accident happened while Paul was riding his motorcycle, and the police and coroner are now looking into the specifics of what happened.
Mr. Smart is best known for winning the 1972 Imola 200 for Ducati, though he also had success in the Grand Prix and at the TT.
After encountering slow-moving traffic on the A21, Gladwell, 65, decided to do a U-turn in his Ford Focus. He passed away at the scene of the collision.
Paul Smart Death Case: David Gladwell Has Been Found Guilty
A man has admitted causing the death of Paul Smart, who died in a crash near Flimwell.
Paul Smart’s death was the result of David Gladwell’s reckless or irresponsible driving on the Lamberhurst Bypass in October 2021.
Gladwell, of Acland Close in Plumstead, appeared in court yesterday and entered a plea of guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, James Nichols, stated: “This case involves a tragic traffic accident on the Lamberhurst Bypass.
“Mr. Gladwell encountered a line of stationary traffic and decided to make a U-turn in the opposite lane. He hit Mr. Smart’s motorcycle in the process. Sadly, he passed away from his wounds.”
Gladwell received an interim driving prohibition pending the outcome of the sentencing hearing at Maidstone Crown Court, which the magistrates handled. The date has not yet been fixed yet.
On October 27, 2021, just before 2 p.m., Mr. Smart passed away.
The family of Mr. Smart released the following statement on the day of the accident: “It is with great sadness that we must inform you that Paul lost his life earlier this afternoon while riding his motorcycle in East Sussex and Kent.”

The legendary racer didn’t just share a successful professional career but also a booming and thriving personal life.
Talking about his love life, Paul was married to Barry Sheene’s sister, Maggie, in 1971. The duo welcomed two children, Scott Smart and Paula Smart, during their marriage.
Furthermore, Paul’s son, Scott, is following his late father’s legacy. He is a former Grand Prix racer who won several races in the British Superbike Championship and then moved to Superstock.
Currently, Scott serves as the technical director of the World Superbike Championship for the FIM.
