Caldwell was shot multiple times by two gunmen in Omagh, County Tyrone, while he was putting footballs in the trunk of his car after coaching.
He was with his son then and is currently in critical but stable condition at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry.
Following the incident, three men aged 38, 45, and 47 were arrested concerning the attempted murder of Caldwell in Omagh.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Chief Constable Simon Byrne stated that the investigation examines connections to violent dissident republicans.

Police Officer John Caldwell Shot Infront Of His Son
Detective Inspector John Caldwell, a senior police officer, was shot in front of his son at a sporting complex in Omagh near Killyclogher Road sports complex.
While coaching an under-15 football team with his young son, the gunmen appeared and fired multiple shots at him.
John is known for leading some of the most high-profile investigations of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
According to Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan, Mr. Caldwell is in a critical but stable condition.
The Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Simon Byrne, said the shooting had sent a “huge shockwave” across the organization.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan paid tribute to Detective Chief Inspector Caldwell’s resilience and commitment and said the force would support them.
Likewise, the New IRA, a dissident republican group, is the primary focus of the investigation into the shooting.

Three Suspects Were Arrested For Shooting John Caldwell
On Wednesday, an off-duty police officer, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, was the target of an attempted murder in Omagh, County Tyrone.
The police has arrested three suspects; nevertheless, they haven’t revealed further information about the gunmen.
Regarding the incident, two gunmen shot Mr. Caldwell while he was placing footballs into the back of his car with his son on Wednesday at 8 pm.
After the shooting, the senior officer attempted to escape but fell to the ground, and the gunmen continued shooting him.

There are speculations that the gunmen fled across the border, and Irish police are assisting in the investigation.
