He was a 16th Lok Sabha member. He defeated INC contender Raj Kumar Balmiki in the election for the 16th Lok Sabha by receiving 612,121 votes out of 1,220,121. He represented Ambala.
As a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Kataria previously won a seat in the 13th Lok Sabha from Ambala.
Rattan was born on December 19, 1951, and attended Kurukshetra University for his education.

Yes, Rattan Lal Kataria, a former Union minister and the BJP’s representative for Ambala passed away on Thursday after a brief illness.
Rattan was suffering from Pneumonia. The former BJP Leader passed away at the age of 71 on May 18, 2023.
Following a medical condition, Lal Kataria had been kept in the PGIMER, Chandigarh, for the previous month.
An aide told PTI that he passed away around 3.30 am. In addition to his wife, Lal Kataria was survived by two daughters and a son.
For the last few days, his condition had been critical. As a result, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, accepted the three-time legislator.
From 2000 to 2003, he presided over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Haryana branch. During his leadership, the Party launched its magazine, Bhajpa Ki Baat, in October 2000.
From May 2019 to July 2021, Kataria held the position of minister of state in the Union Ministries of Jal Shakti and Social Justice and Empowerment.
Kataria, a well-known BJP Dalit representative, led the Party’s Haryana unit from 2000 to 2003. In the Haryana administration, he served as a minister as well.
In 1999, 2014, and 2019, he was elected from Ambala to the Lok Sabha. As a young artist, Kataria had previously won a prize from the then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Kataria was appointed Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Social Justice, and Empowerment in May 2019.

Former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP in-charge for Haryana Biplab Kumar Deb arrived at Chandigarh PGI on Wednesday evening to check on the 71-year-old and wish him a fast recovery.

Mr. Khattar stated that Lal Kataria always raised his voice in Parliament to advance society and the people of Haryana, adding his departure is an irreparable loss to politics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the loss of the Lok Sabha member, who also praised him for his significant contributions to social justice and public service.
