The 25-year-old played college football at Iowa Hawkeyes before being drafted by the Bills in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

According to NBC Sports, Riley Patterson was the lowest-paid kicker in the Detroit team, with a one-year deal worth $660,000. 

Among 44 kickers in the books across 32 teams, the team had both of the lowest-paid kickers, with the next being Austin Seibert.

Patterson started his football career by playing high school football at Edwardsville, later committing to Memphis on August 17, 2016.

He played 41 games at Memphis, scoring 351 points. He made two out of two field goal attempts and three extra point attempts during the 2021 Senior Bowl.

At the start of his pro career, Patterson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in May 2021.

After an injury settlement, he was released and signed to the New England Patriots practice squad in October of that year.

A month later, the Detroit Lions signed Patterson, and he made extra points in his NFL debut against the Chicago Bears. Likewise, he scored his first field goal against the Minnesota Vikings on December 5.

After an impressive Week 15 performance in a 30-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Patterson earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

He was waived in August 2022 and then claimed off by his current team Jacksonville Jaguars.
