Born Roberto Martínez Montoliu, Roberto Martinez is a talented Spanish football coach and former professional athlete. The Balaguer native most recently served as the coach of the Belgium national team.

After retiring from his playing career, Roberto began coaching in 2007 with Swansea City.

Before becoming the head coach of Belgium’s national football team in 2016, he worked with Wigan Athletic and Everton.

Roberto Martinez resigned from his role as the head coach of Belgium. After his team’s early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the decision was made public.

Belgium’s national team was eliminated from the group stage after their goalless draw with Croatia, placing third behind Croatia and group winners Morocco.

If they had won their final group encounter, they would have advanced to the round of 16. According to the reports, Belgium had multiple chances to score against Croatia but didn’t take them.

Roberto Martinez Decision Has Nothing To Do With His Team Elimination From World Cup

According to ESPN, the head coach told the news conference that that was his last game with the national team.

When asked to clarify his decision, the talented coach said his relationship with Belgium was set to end even if they were the world champion.

He added, “it has nothing to do with being eliminated at this stage.” Martinez disclosed he made his decision before the World Cup.

The coach joined Belgium in May 2016. He guided the so-called “golden generation” to a third-place finish in the 2018 World Cup and reached the quarterfinal in the Euro 2020.

Furthermore, the Roya Belgian FA (RBFA) said in a statement that they were very dissatisfied after the early exit and thereby let down the people of their country who supported the team throughout their journey.

Roberto Martinez was congratulated for everything he accomplished with the Golden Generation during his four years as a coach and technical director by Peter Bossaert, the CEO of Belgian Soccer Federation.

He continued by saying that the coach left an enormous legacy for future Belgian 

The Belgium national team forward Michy Batshuayi revealed that Roberto was emotional while informing the squad about his decision.

As for his next step, little is known about where he is going after leaving the national team. We wish Martinez good luck in his upcoming endeavors.

Roberto Martinez was born on 13 July 1973 in Balaguer, Catalonia, to his parents. He began playing at his hometown, CF Balaguer, in Tercera Division.

Roberto had a great career, playing for two youth teams and numerous senior teams. He also proved that he was among the top coaches in the sports business.

Roberto Martinez’s wife is from Scotland.

Before getting married at Swansea’s St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the couple dated for some time. The couple reportedly met for the first time in 2002 in Scotland.

The ex-footballer was playing for Motherwell at the time.

Since then, they have been together. Above all, they are blessed with two adorable daughters, Luella and Safiana. The Martinez family must be enjoying their life.
