Romelu Lukaku is a Christian. More specifically, he is a practicing Roman Catholic. British tabloids once wrongly claimed that he was a ‘devout Muslim.’
Lukaku does not hold back when showing his belief to the world and can often be seen praying before or after matches.
In 2014, he made the pilgrimage to Lourdes, a primary Catholic pilgrimage site. He is also teetotal. The proud and devout believer also makes his faith part of his goals and wins celebrations.
At the end of a Belgium-Panama match, Lukaku got down on his knees and prayed next to Fidel Escobar, a Panamanian player who is an Evangelical Christian.
In front of the world’s media, the two players shared a moment with outstretched arms raised toward the sky, which is the oldest gesture of Christian prayer. Understandably, the picture went global.

Lukau was born in Belgium to Catholic parents of Congolese origin. He grew up in poverty but always had faith.
“I was six years old… We didn’t have enough money to make it last the whole week. Not just poor, we were broke,” Lukaku shared.
But he kept the faith and swore to God that he would improve things for his mother and family.
“Romelu is very religious. He always tries to thank God,” his Father, Roger Lukaku. He also shared that his son prays 10 to 15 times daily, often in silence.

He essentially comes from a family of footballers. His Father, Roger Menama Lukaku, is a former footballer who also played forward.
Throughout his career, Roger played for teams like KV Oostende, KV Mechelen, and Germinal Ekeren.
Likewise, Romelu has a brother named Jordan Lukaku, who plays as a left-back for the Spanish side SD Ponferradina. He progressed through the Anderlecht youth academy and played for Belgium’s Royal Antwerp.
