Jalosjos served just 12 years in prison for the rape of an 11-year-old child before being freed from the New Bilibid Prison in March 2009.

His 1997 conviction for child rape was commuted by his political friend, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, then the president and currently a representative for Pampanga.

Arrest Charge Of Romeo Jalosjos

He was taken into custody in the Makati City Jail after being apprehended at Bagac, Bataan, on January 17, 1997.

Jalosjos was found guilty of six acts of lasciviousness and two charges of statutory rape in December 1997 by Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 62.

He appealed to the Supreme Court, but in 2001 and 2002, it upheld his conviction. The conviction by the lower court made it possible for Jalosjos to be transferred to the New Bilibid Prison in 1998.

Jalosjos was convicted, yet he could still run for re-election in 1998 and 2001 and prevail. He continued in his position until 2002 the Supreme Court upheld his conviction.

Subsequently, his name was removed from the House of Representatives membership list.

The Supreme Court upheld Jalosjos’ sentences of reclusion perpetua for each crime of statutory rape in its ruling from 2001, as well as an unspecified punishment of reclusion temporal for each count of acts of lasciviousness.

Along with moral damages of P50,000 per count, the convicted congressman was also ordered to pay the victim P50,000 as civil indemnity for each count of statutory rape and acts of lasciviousness.

On the advice of the Department of Justice, Malacaang shortened Jalosjos’ sentenced to 16 years, three months, and three days in April 2007.
