Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan was born in Crawley, West Sussex, England, to Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu parents Ranga and Sivashanthini “Shanthi” Ranganathan.
Romesh attended Reigate Grammar School in Reigate, Surrey, from 1990 to 1992, an independent school for boys (now co-ed).
Afterward, he was educated at Hazelwick School, a state comprehensive school in his hometown of Crawley. He then studied Mathematics at Birkbeck College, University of London.
