Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State from February 24, 2017, passed away on December 27, 2023, following an extended struggle with leukemia.

The 67-year-old two-term governor, who had been battling a severe illness, succumbed to his condition in Germany around 10 pm, where he was receiving medical treatment.

Conflicting reports suggest he passed away in Germany, as per a commissioner in Ondo state, while a family source claims he died in Lagos.

Despite attempts to fly him abroad for treatment, he was managed by State House doctors until his demise.

Akeredolu’s health had been a concern, leading to his return from a three-month medical leave in Germany in September.

He took another medical leave recently after President Bola Tinubu directed him to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who has been serving as Acting Governor.

The gravity of his health situation became evident when, on July 9, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, announced the suspension of activities planned for her 70th birthday celebration.

Sources from the Alagbaka Government House revealed that the governor was seriously affected by the leukemia he had.

Leukemia, a type of blood cancer characterized by an abnormal increase in white blood cells, presented a formidable health challenge for Akeredolu.

Akeredolu’s family life was anchored by his marriage to Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu in 1981, and together, they raised a son named Babajide A. Akeredolu.

His political journey included an unsuccessful attempt to secure the governorship in 2012, losing to the incumbent Olusegun Mimiko.

Before becoming governor in 2017, he had served as the state’s attorney general from 1997 to 1999.
