On March 4, 2019, Nancy Cantor was caught on camera yelling at officers while investigating a minor traffic accident involving her driver’s car and a Rutgers University Police car.

Officials from Rutgers-Newark stated that a driver in a black sedan had arrived to pick up Cantor from the Center for Law and Justice on Washington Avenue in Newark and take her to the airport. 

According to NJ Advance Media, the black sedan jolted after striking the bumper of a campus Police car parked along the curb. The policeman in the squad car got to work looking into the collision and gathering information for a report.

Chancellor Nancy Cantor of Rutgers-Newark admitted to the campus Police that morning in March when they attempted to look into a minor collision between her driver and a campus Police car that she wasn’t her “best self.”

Cantor yelled angrily at an officer on the scene on March 4 and said they’d be in trouble if she missed her flight, according to body camera footage obtained by NJ Advance Media.

She also shouted that she was the chancellor and that she’d love to see President Robert Barchi get treated in that manner, referring to Rutgers’ president.

Three months after the incident, Cantor apologized to campus Police on June 11. 

Cantor wrote in her letter that she regrets how she handled the situation and is aware that she wasn’t at her best that morning. She continued by expressing her admiration for the RUPD and gratitude for the work the officers do each day to maintain the safety and security of the community and campus.

When asked if Cantor or the staff members who joined her that morning broke any rules, University representatives did not respond. On the body camera footage, a staff member could be heard telling her to take a picture and go because she was on University business.

According to the NJ Advance Media article, the Rutgers-Newark Police and administrators on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus accepted the chancellor’s apology.
