Safet Gjici, the former Mayor of Kukës, finds himself facing continued incarceration as the Court of Appeals Against Organized Crime and Corruption rejected his plea for release from prison.
This development unfolded during a session held on a Friday morning, where the court also deliberated on a similar request made by another defendant, Alma Kaçi.
Regrettably, for Gjici, the judges decided to uphold the ruling issued by the First Instance Special Chamber at the end of June.
Consequently, Safet Gjici remains in prison, while Alma Kaçi has been placed under house arrest.
The charges against Safet Gjici include “abuse of office” and “passive corruption,” as investigations by the Special Prosecutor’s Office intensify.
Simultaneously, Alma Kaçi faces allegations of “active corruption.”
This legal saga began on June 16, 2023, when investigations into Gjici and Kaçi commenced.
The arrest of the former Mayor of Kukës transpired on June 24, following an order from the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
It’s worth noting that Safet Gjici had been reconfirmed as Kukës’ mayor after the local elections in Albania on May 14.
However, he offered his resignation after a compromising video surfaced on social media depicting intimate moments with a woman within his municipal office, later identified as Alma Kaçi.
