Sergio Catalan was a Chilean mule driver who dedicated his life to raising and herding sheep. His name came into the media prominence after being linked to an incident that happened in 1972.
The incident is about an accident on Flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force that happened on October 13, 1972. The plane crashed in the Andes mountains.
It was a charter flight that the day before had departed from Montevideo (Uruguay) to Santiago (Chile). The plane crash in the Andes and the survival that followed are now called the Andes Tragedy and the Andes Miracle, respectively.
Following that, two survivors Roberto Canessa and Fernando Parrado contacted Sergio and it made his rescue possible on December 21.

Sergio Catalan was a Chilean mule driver whose name came into the media prominence after two survivors of Andes Mountain contacted him.
Catalan helped two survivors named Roberto Canessa and Fernando Parrado. After 72 days in the wild, Catalan met both men who had walked from the crash site to a nearby river.
Due to that, Sergio got recognition and he was praised by everyone. Furthermore, the matter related to Catalan has also been featured in some documentaries including Alive: 20 Years Later.
A Netflix movie named The Snow Society has been released and Sergio is making headlines as his character has also appeared briefly in the film.

Sergio Catalan age was 91 years at the time of his death on February 11, 2020. For your information, Catalan was born in 1929 in Black Bridge, Chile.
His full birth name was said to be Sergio Hilario Catalán MartÃnez. There are not many facts related to his family life as Sergio kept everything confidential.
Apart from that, Catalan was married to his wife Virginia Toro. The pair tied the knot in the year 1929. Being married for a long time, Catalan and Toro also started a family of their own.

Andes Plane Crash Rescuer Sergio Catalan Died In 2020
As said earlier, Sergio Catalan made headlines when he got linked to the Andes Plane crash that happened on October 13, 1972.
On December 21, 1972, while herding cattle with his sons, including Juan de la Cruz, near the Barroso River, he noticed someone waving from the opposite bank. It was Fernando Parrado and Roberto Canessa.
Unable to communicate through screams due to the noisy current, Sergio tossed a notebook and pen to those two people.
Roberto and Fernando shared crash details, and seeing their condition, Catalan responded with four loaves of bread and an encouraging message.
Following that, Sergio did everything to help the plane crash survivors. Sadly, Catalan took his last breath on February 11, 2020. His remains were buried in the Parque San Fernando cemetery.
