Johnson participated in the Junior Olympics National Championships when she was 12 years old, placing fourth overall, first on the beam and second on the floor.

Johnson was not invited to the national team training camps when she was younger, and her coach, Liang Chow, had no contact with the national staff.

Johnson’s video was sent by Chow to Marta Karolyi, the National Team Coordinator, in 2005 with the note, “I believe this kid can help the U.S. team.” Wow, this coach is pretty cocky, Karolyi thought. Yet, she quickly welcomed Johnson to national team training camps despite her opinion that the behavior was daring.

On her first try, Johnson achieved the Junior International Elite qualification. She received a lot of attention when she finished third in the 2005 U.S. Classic. Johnson finished eighth all-around at the 2005 U.S. National Championships after falling off the beam on the opening day of competition.

A Jaeger on bars and two top-difficulty (G) abilities, a full-in back-out dismount off the beam, and a double-twisting double back on the floor were among the new skills Johnson added in 2006.

She outperformed all her senior elite competitors at the 2006 U.S. Junior National All-Around Championship, winning with a higher score than theirs.
