He is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers in NCAA history, having won three national championships in three seasons (2021,2019, and 2018) while competing for the University of Iowa.

Lee started wrestling at a young age and quickly became a standout in the sport. He won four Pennsylvania state championships while attending Franklin Regional High School.

In college, the wrestler continued his dominance, winning the NCAA championship in his freshman year despite wrestling with a torn ACL.

Spencer won again in 2019 and was set to compete for a fourth national title in 2020, but the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he returned in 2021 to win his third championship.

On 18th March 2023, Iowa announced that Spencer wouldn’t compete for the third position and has taken the decision to medically forfeit.

The University of Iowa shared the statement on Saturday morning saying, “It has been a long journey of a speedy recovery for Spencer Lee. He is going to medically forfeit out of the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships today in Tulsa.”

On Saturday morning, Spencer was scheduled to fight against Arizona State’s Brandon Courtney in the consolation semifinals. 

Since his senior year of high school, the wrestler has fought numerous knee injuries, competing for a whole season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and taking home his third national championship after tearing the other one.

To have his ACLs in both knees repaired at the beginning of January 2022, he skipped the previous season.
