Naik had played three Test matches and two One Day Internationals for India in 1974. He had also captained the Mumbai cricket team in the Ranji Trophy and led them to a title victory in 1970-71.

Naik’s health deteriorated on Sunday night, and they were informed that the next 72 hours would be critical.
