Judge Nolan emphasized that the new sentence would begin only after the current sentence imposed by Judge Codd two years ago expired.

Judge Nolan added that he had to consider mitigating factors when passing a sentence. This included McClean’s guilty plea, remorse, and age in this case.

He added that it was hoped that McClean’s time in prison would change him and that he would not be a danger to anyone upon release.

Former Terenure College teacher & rugby coach John McClean was sentenced to an additional four years in prison on Friday for sexual crimes he committed against boys at the school.

“This court has to deal with the abuse of boys under the accused’s care over a protracted period,” Judge Martin Nolan said in a passing sentence on Friday.

In the case, there are 22 complainants, some of whom were abused only once, while others were abused three, four, six, seven, and up to eight times.

Former rugby coach John McClean has been jailed for four years for the sexual abuse of 22 boys at Terenure College over 20 years.

McClean had already served an eight-year sentence for abusing 23 students at the school in 2021. This sentence is added to the existing sentence and will begin when it is served in February 2027.

McClean has 96 previous convictions, all for indecent assault of young boys under the age of eighteen who attended Terenure College.

This latest sentence highlights the severity of McClean’s crimes and the need for justice to be served.

Also, it serves as a reminder of the significance of safeguarding youth who are at risk and the necessity of holding institutions liable for the security of their pupils.
