Spader is a sixth-generation grandson of Connecticut legislator Seth P. Beers and his third great-grandfather, Laurent Clerc, was a co-founder of the American School for the Deaf.

His mother taught painting at The Pike School in Andover, where he received his early education, and attended The Brooks School in North Andover where his father was a teacher.

James had a variety of jobs while pursuing his dream of being a full-time actor, including bartending, yoga instruction, driving a meat truck, and loading train cars.
