Among the fatalities, Tyneka Johnson was a 22-year-old from Portsmouth, and Randall “Randy” Belvins was a 70-year-old from Chesapeake.

The victims’ friends and family looked to their memories as they processed the horrific news.

Casheba Cannon, who tutored Tyneka Johnson for two years at Western Branch High School, recalled her as a young person who dreamed of attending college.

Cannon shared how she was willing to work through her academic weaknesses to improve herself, along with the backing of a supportive family.

Moreover, Tyreka was always a fashionista during weekly sessions, arriving with her hair and nails neatly done while exhibiting an upbeat personality and a love of music and dancing. She was highly welcoming and friendly, Cannon said.

On the other hand, Randy Blevins was a longtime staff member who worked to set prices and arrange merchandise.

Shaundrayia Reese, a former coworker who worked at the store from 2015 to 2018, referred to Blevins affectionately as “Mr. Randy.”

The final victim, a 16-year-old boy, is not named since he was a minor. According to a Company rep., Walmart staff members made up five or six of the casualties. They were unwilling to confirm if the teenager also worked there.

Mass Shootings Have Increased Recently In The City Of Chesapeake

The Walmart incident marks another mass shooting in Chesapeake, Virginia, a city generally considered safe and peaceful.

Earlier this month, a 22-year-old student allegedly killed three fellow students at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, barely 170 miles west of Chesapeake.

Another 22-year-old reportedly opened Fire at an LGBTQ bar in Colorado Springs over the weekend, killing five people and injuring 19.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 600 mass shootings and 39,000 gun violence deaths have occurred in the United States this year.

We hope stricter gun rules or other timely steps are taken to prevent such unprecedented shootings in the days to come.
