In Kollam district, a woman doctor named Vandana Das was fatally stabbed by a Police detainee at the Kottarakkara government taluk hospital in the early hours of Wednesday.
Although Ms. Das was later taken to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, she eventually succumbed to her injuries. The medical community was left shaken by this workplace attack.
The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) State president Dr. T. N. Suresh, demanded a Statewide protest against the government’s purported failure to provide workplace protection to healthcare professionals.

The attack took place in a hospital in Kerala, India. The patient was not handcuffed while receiving treatment and reportedly attacked Dr. Das with scissors while she was dressing his wounds. The incident resulted in Dr. Das’s death and injuries to several other hospital staff members and Police officers.

The cause of death, therefore, was the stabbing itself, which was linked to the attacker’s violent behavior and the apparent lack of proper security measures.

According to reports, a five-member Police team had detained Sandeep, a suspected assailant, on domestic violence charges.
They had brought him to the hospital’s trauma care center for testing for alcohol and drug impairment. While at the hospital, Sandeep allegedly grabbed a scalpel and stabbed Vandana Das, a hospital employee, multiple times in her neck and back.
It is also reported that Sandeep turned on the Police officers escorting him to the hospital, injuring four of them.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has criticized the Police for failing to handcuff Sandeep, who was known to be overtly violent at the time of his arrest and during his detention at the station House.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the healthcare community in Kerala and beyond, highlighting the need for urgent action to improve safety and security for healthcare workers.
Authorities Call for Healthcare Security
Mr. Suresh, presumably a medical association or union representative, has urged the government to make the laws strict.
He urged the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012, to be stricter by amending it to provide better protection for healthcare workers and facilities.
This call for stricter measures comes in response to the stabbing of Dr. Vandana Das, which highlights the urgent need for better security measures in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Mr. Suresh specifically called for installing surveillance cameras and round-the-clock Police protection for government hospitals to help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
