On the Jewish fasting holiday of Yom Kippur, former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was taken to the hospital after becoming unwell.

According to Israel’s broadcaster Kan, Netanyahu, 72, was transported to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek hospital after experiencing chest symptoms while attending synagogue services. 

According to local media, he had a series of tests that came out normal, but he was kept under observation overnight.

Netanyahu remarked on social media, “I feel better and appreciate everyone’s support and love.”

The patient was hospitalized a little over a month before Israel’s fifth national election in under four years.

Like the previous four, the election outcome on November 1 will largely depend on how people feel about Netanyahu, who is currently facing a corruption prosecution.

According to surveys, his Likud Party would finish first. Still, it is unclear whether allied parties can gain enough seats to allow him to build a majority coalition government in parliament.

Yom Kippur, the Jewish calendar’s yearly Day of Atonement, is marked by fervent prayer and a 25-hour fast.

According to his party, Netanyahu was released from a Jerusalem hospital on Thursday, a day after being admitted with chest symptoms.

Netanyahu, 73, was rushed to the city’s Shaarei Tzedek hospital late Wednesday after feeling ill during Yom Kippur synagogue prayers.

He had medical exams and was kept overnight for observation. His lab results were normal, according to the hospital.
