What Happened To Katie Stubblefield?
When Katie was 18 years old, on March 25, 2014, her older brother Robert Stubblefield discovered her after hearing gunfire in a bathroom at his home in Mississippi.
He was in shock. When Katie lost her face, it was a tragic day, but Katie didn’t recall it. She has admitted that she doesn’t recall much of that year, even the time she spent in an Oxford, Mississippi, hospital.
Additionally, she has no memory of being flown to a different hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, before moving to Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where she would receive a face transplant three years later.

She experienced betrayal in a personal relationship and had surgery for ongoing digestive issues. Around that time, according to Katie’s Father, Robb, Alesia, Katie’s mother, was abruptly fired from her position as a teacher at Katie’s school for questioning several unethical decisions.
Why Did Katie Stubblefield Commit Suicide?
There were many emotional challenges Katie had to overcome in the days leading up to her suicide attempt. For Katie, it all began with a gun and a broken heart.
Years before that momentous event, she was going through a trying year. The senior in high school was dealing with post-appendectomy health issues. Katie’s parents, both teachers at her high school, had both lost their jobs. According to Robb Stubblefield, Katie may have taken it in and felt it deeply.

Later, on March 25, 2014, Katie’s boyfriend ended their relationship. She drove to her older brother Robert’s House after getting out of school early out of anger and upset.
Katie Stubblefield Face Transplant- Before and After
Katie was added to the waiting list for a face transplant in March 2016. A donor was located 14 months later. According to National Geographic, Adrea Schneider, a 31-year-old woman, overdosed on drugs and passed away.
As a candidate for a face transplant and suicide survivor, Katie underwent a thorough psychological evaluation before the procedure. The surgical team 3D-printed a model template for the reconstruction using CT scans of Katie’s sister Olivia McCay’s jaw.
He mentioned that he was concerned for Katie’s life when he first noticed her injury.
According to Cleveland Clinic, Katie’s full facial tissue was effectively replaced through the transplantation of her scalp, forehead, upper and lower eyelids, nose, upper cheeks, upper jaw, and half of her lower jaw, as well as partial facial nerves, muscles, and skin.

According to Dr. Brian Gastman, the plastic surgeon who oversaw Katie’s care and performed her surgery, surgeons at Cleveland Clinic used 3D printing to help reconstruct about 90% of Katie’s lower jaw before her face was transplanted.
