Pope Benedict XVI Health Issues
While on vacation in the Alps on July 17, 2009, Benedict fell and broke his right wrist; although his injuries were minor, he was taken to the hospital.
After Benedict’s resignation was announced, the Vatican disclosed that he had a pacemaker implanted while he was still a cardinal before his election as Pope in 2005.
Although the pacemaker’s battery had been replaced three months earlier during a regular procedure, it did not affect his choice.
Benedict was “extremely unwell,” according to Pope Francis, who concluded his audience on December 28, 2022, and prayed to God to “comfort him and support him in this testimony of love for the church until the *****.”
