Early Life of Lara Spencer
Spencer grew up in Garden City, Long Island, New York, the daughter of Richard Ernest and Carolyn von Seelen. In 1987, she graduated from Garden City High School.
She was a nationally ranked competitive diver who attended Penn State University on an athletic scholarship for springboard and platform diving.
In 1991, her senior year, she was named an All-American Athlete and graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Following college, Spencer joined the N.B.C. page program, where she volunteered to work alongside other reporters to gain experience.
She went on to work for CBS affiliate WDEF-TV in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she “was a one-man band” as a reporter, producer, editor, photographer, and news van driver.
