Co-anchor of Weekend Today and reporter for American television, David Jerome Bloom, passed away unexpectedly in 2003 after a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) developed into a pulmonary embolism.

Regarding the intercollegiate policy debate, Bloom was ranked first in the country in 1985.

David Bloom is survived by two brothers, Jim Bloom & John Bloom. There’s little known about the brothers on the internet; additionally, they aren’t present much on social platforms. 

However, at the time of David Bloom’s death, the brothers, Jim Bloom, and John Bloom made a social presence and shared few words regarding their brother’s sudden death. 

Bloom was remembered as a man who had struggled with personal issues recently and was at peace with the idea of perishing in Iraq by his two brothers, Jim and John, as well as his best friend.

According to older brother John, hours before he passed away, he sent Melanie an email expressing how his time spent reporting on the conflict had changed him and made him realize how meaningful his relationship with her and their girls was.

“Baby brother,” James Bloom recalled, “a skinny kid with Buddy Holly-like glasses… a brilliant debater,” a tennis player who “despite a horrible second serve and a backhand that needed work desperately… was always my most formidable opponent” in a voice uncannily similar to that of his deceased sibling.

David Bloom’s Death Cause: How Did He Die?

David Bloom of N.B.C. died while working in Iraq on April 6, 2003. The war correspondent was ready for any danger, but his manner of death surprised his family and the world.

Deep vein thrombosis complications were the cause of death.

Bloom had a deadly pulmonary embolism, or sudden blockage in a lung artery, due to a blood clot that originated in his legs and eventually migrated to his lungs.

This blood clot is thought to have been partially triggered by spending long days in tight armored trucks.

As the 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. troops moved north toward Baghdad, Bloom, 39, passed out while attached to the unit. He left behind his three little kids, Melanie, his wife, and them.

David Bloom, the son of Laura Jean and Harold James Bloom, was born in Edina, Minnesota. He loved playing ice hockey and won the state championship in high school forensic debate.

Bloom studied political science at Pitzer College in Claremont, California, from 1981 to 1983.

Nicole, Christine, Ava, his three daughters, and his wife Melanie survived Bloom. At the time of his passing, the Blooms were Pound Ridge, New York residents.

His wife joined the Coalition to Prevent DVT after his passing and got remarried to Daniel McNulty in 2008.

He started reporting local government topics for WKBT-TV in La Crosse, Wisconsin. From 1988 to 1989, Bloom was a general assignment reporter at KWCH-TV in Wichita, Kansas.
