German civil engineer Lamia Messari-Becker has been teaching building physics and technology at the University of Siegen since 2013.

The Moroccan-born served on the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) from July 1, 2016, until June 30, 2020, where she represented the fields of civil engineering and sustainable urban development.

Prof. Messari-Becker is also a policy expert who has been a member of the Federal Ministry of Building’s Expert Group on Future Construction since 2017.

Additionally, the engineer has served at the Convention of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, the prestigious Club of Rome since 2020, and the German Government’s Expert Council on the Environment from 2016 to 2020.

Lamia Messari-Becker Educational Background

Lamia Messari-Becker completed her high school education in Kénitra and spent two semesters studying physics and chemistry at the University of Kénitra while residing in Morocco until 1992.

She went to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1992 to study there. After taking a language course in Krefeld, she completed the state preparatory college at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

She later completed her civil engineering degree at the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2001. She worked there as a research assistant from 2001 to 2009.

In collaboration with the Faculty of Law and Economics at the Technical University, she finished her doctoral work in 2006 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy on sustainable emission reduction in existing residential structures incorporating CO 2-Certificates.

She completed her postgraduate management studies in 2005 at the TH Karlsruhe (now KIT).

Even now, the civil engineer carries out research on municipal climate protection plans as well as resource efficiency, sustainability, and climate protection in building construction and urban development.

She discusses techniques and tools for conserving resources and lowering CO2 in the building industry, including analyses of implementing CO2 certificate trading in residential structures.

Messari-Becker examines issues like barriers to energy renovation, citizen involvement, a collaboration between energy consumers and suppliers, and their function in local climate protection strategies.

She works at the intersection of technology and social issues.
