Paul Ogrady was born to his parents – Mary Savage and Patrick Grady.
His mother was born in England to Irish immigrants. Similarly, his father was Irish and grew up in Ballincurry County before relocating to England in 1936.
When he enlisted in the Royal Air Force, a paperwork error caused Paul’s last name to be changed from “Grady” to “O’Grady,” and he kept the new name.
Paul was the third child of his parents. He has an elder brother, Brendan, and an elder sister, Sheila.
In his 20s, O’Grady went to London and began working as a social worker for Camden council. At homosexual bars by 1978, he was honing his drag persona Lily Savage, a loud-mouthed single mother and sporadic *** worker based on female relatives.
