Following the recommendation of the Manhattan District Attorney, the convictions of the five teenagers, including Yusef Salaam, was overturned on December 19, 2002.

Salaam had served almost seven years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

The case of the Central Park Five, as it came to be known, attracted widespread media attention and sparked public debate about police coercion, false confessions, and the treatment of juveniles during police interrogations.

The five young men, all African American or Latino, were arrested and charged in 1989 with raping a white woman who was jogging in Central Park, New York City.

The prosecution’s case relied heavily on the defendants’ confessions, obtained after lengthy interrogations by the Police.

However, DNA evidence found on the victim did not match that of any of the five accused, and a serial rapist later confessed to the crime.
