Crean was born on November 21, 1950, in Melbourne. He was one of Mary and Frank Crean’s three biological sons.

One of his two brothers, Simon Crean passed away in Berlin on June 25, 2023, at 74. He had been in Germany as part of an industry delegation.

In 1985, at 38, his other brother, Stephen Crean, died while skiing alone at Charlotte Pass in New South Wales; his body wasn’t discovered for another two years.
