Don Shane was born on September 23, 1955, in Flint, Michigan, and grew up in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills.
Before becoming a sports broadcaster, Shane worked as a rock and roll disc jockey at several radio stations in Michigan.
He attended Michigan State University, earning a degree in telecommunications. After college, he began his broadcasting career at the radio station WCAR in Detroit.
The late reporter worked at several other radio and television stations in Michigan, including WJR, WXYZ, and WWJ.
In 1985, Shane joined the sports department at WXYZ-TV in Detroit and began working as a sportscaster in 1989 for almost 30 years before retiring in 2016.
