Before becoming a sports broadcaster, Shane worked as a rock and roll disc jockey at several radio stations in Michigan.

He attended Michigan State University, earning a degree in telecommunications. After college, he began his broadcasting career at the radio station WCAR in Detroit.

The late reporter worked at several other radio and television stations in Michigan, including WJR, WXYZ, and WWJ.
