William Friedkin passed away on Monday at his home in the Los Angeles Bel Air district. He was 87 years old at the time of his death.

According to his wife, Sherry Lansing, a longtime Executive at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, William Friedkin death cause was heart failure and pneumonia.

According to a spokesman from his office, Friedkin, who won the best director Oscar for “The French Connection,” passed away on Monday in Los Angeles. 

Sherry Lansing, his wife and former studio chief, also verified it to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to his wife, he died because of heart failure and pneumonia. Friedkin was the son of Rachael and Louis Friedkin, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1935. 

His father worked as a merchant seaman, men’s apparel dealer, and semi-professional softball player. His mother worked as an operating room registered nurse, and Friedkin referred to her as “a saint.” 

His parents were Ukrainian Jews who immigrated to Israel. During a particularly brutal anti-Jewish pogrom in Ukraine in 1903, his grandparents, parents, and other relatives escaped. 

Friedkin grew up in a lower middle class home whose father had a mixed attitude about accumulating wealth.

Friedkin “viewed his father with a mixture of affection and contempt for not making more of himself,” writes film historian Peter Biskind. 

Friedkin started working for WGN-TV in the mail room after graduating from high school. He began directing live television programs and documentaries within two years. 

The People vs. Paul Crump (1962), which received praise at the San Francisco International Film Festival and helped to commute Crump’s death sentence, was one of his works.

Its success aided Friedkin in landing a position with director David L. Wolper. Mayhem on a Sunday Afternoon, a documentary with a football theme, was another work he produced.
