Is Yuji Naka Still In Jail? The Sonic Creator In Prison For Insider Trading

The co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, Yuji Naka, reportedly accepted guilt for engaging in insider trading while working at Square Enix.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office detained Naka on November 17, 2022, and accused him of breaking the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act of 2006.

The Public Prosecutors Office charged him with insider trading involving confidential information, and media reports suggested that the arrest had something to do with the upcoming smartphone game Dragon Quest Tact.

Before the game’s release to the public, Naka reportedly purchased 10,000 shares of the developer, Aiming.

In addition, 2 extra former Square Enix workers were jailed on charges that they purchased 162,000 shares between December 2019 and February 2020 for about 47.2 million yen.

Furthermore, on December 7, Yuji was detained once more on suspicion of purchasing 144.7 million yen worth of shares of game creator ATeam before the release of their title, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.

Later, the Public Prosecutors Office for the Tokyo District filed an insider dealing indictment against him.

Moreover, the video programmer has reportedly acknowledged guilt and told a court that there is “no doubt” that he did what was allegedly done, according to NHK (via VGC).

The verdict of Yuji Naka’s court appearance is not yet public. Given that insider trading is expressly prohibited by the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act of Japan, his alleged admittance of guilt will probably result in additional charges. Thus, he might still be in jail.
