On April 25, 2020, Zarina Hashmi passed away. She was a Muslim. Therefore, it’s probable that she was buried the same day she passed away or the following day, although there isn’t much information about her funeral.

Professionally known as Zarina, Zarina Hashmi was an Indian-American printer and artist in New York City.

Zarina Rashid Career Details

Zarina Rashid was born on July 16, 1937, in Aligarh, British India, to Fahmida Begum, a housewife, and Sheikh Abdur Rashid, a professor at Aligarh Muslim University.

1958 Zarina graduated with a BS in mathematics from the Aligarh Muslim University.

She later pursued a variety of printmaking techniques in Thailand, Paris’ Atelier 17 workshop, where she apprenticed under Stanley William Hayter, and Tokyo, Japan, where she worked with artist Tshi Yoshida.

She was a New York City resident and team member. At the Connected Women’s Center for Learning in the 1980s, Zarina taught papermaking courses while serving on the board of the New York Feminist Art Institute.

She contributed to the “Third World Women” edition of the feminist art journal Heresies while serving on its editorial board.

On April 25, 2020, Zarina passed away in London due to complications from her Alzheimer’s. A Google Doodle created in honor of Zarina’s 86th birthday was released on July 16, 2023.
