Zooey Deschanel Family And Ethnicity

Zooey Deschanel is the younger child of actress Mary Jo Deschanel (and filmmaker and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel.

Zooey shares Swiss, Dutch, English, Irish, and other French ancestry with her older sister Emily. French-born and a native of Oullins, Rhône, was her paternal grandfather.

Deschanel’s paternal grandmother was from a Quaker family. The actress was given the name Zooey Glass in honor of Zooey Glass, the male lead in J. D. Salinger’s 1961 short story Franny and Zooey.

Zooey was born and raised in Los Angeles, although she traveled a lot as a youngster since her father worked as a site manager for movies.

The performer went to an elite prep school in Santa Monica called Crossroads, where she made friends with future co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson.

While attending the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts and intending to pursue a career in musical theatre, Deschanel sang throughout her time in high school.

Before leaving Northwestern University to pursue acting, Zooey spent nine months there. In 1998, Deschanel made a cameo appearance on the television program Veronica’s Closet.
