According to publicist Roger Neal, the Grammy winner Anita Pointer died while she was with family members.

Anita’s cause of death was not immediately disclosed. It was later revealed that she died from Cancer.

Her family stated they are comforted that Anita is now at peace with her daughter Jada and sisters June and Bonnie, but her death deeply saddens them. Jada Pointer, Anita Pointer’s only daughter, died in 2003.

In 2003, Pointer’s personal life was marked by tragedy when her only child, Jada Pointer, died of cancer at age 37. She raised her granddaughter Roxie McKain Pointer after that.

They also revealed who she was, who had kept them all close for so long. Anita, Ruth, Bonnie, and June Pointer grew up singing in their Father’s church in Oakland, California, as the daughters of a minister.

Anita Pointer’s health became a topic of conversation in musical circles in October 2021, when her scheduled appearance on the U.S. reality singing competition The Masked Singer was canceled due to the singer “dealing with an illness.” She was set to make her debut alongside her sister, Ruth Pointer.

Her family expressed their grief at her death. “With Anita there, Heaven is a more loving and beautiful place,” they said in a statement.

Anita formed The Pointer Sisters with June and Bonnie Pointer family members in 1969, while her siblings performed as Pointers, a Pair across the United States.

Sister Ruth then joined the band, and they won a Grammy in 1975 for their single Fairytale. While Bonnie went on to pursue a solo career, the remaining members rose to prominence as a trio in the 1980s.

Jump (For My Love), one of their most well-known songs, rode the wave of electro-pop popularity in the early 1980s, becoming the best-selling American dance single of 1984. Years later, a cover by Girls Aloud achieved international success.
