Cyril Ramaphosa’s religion is Christianity. The South African President follows the Christian faith.

The 71-year-old comes from a Christian family and observes Christian norms.

During his school days at Mphaphuli High School in Sibasa, Venda, Ramaphosa was elected the leader of the Student Christian Movement.

He graduated in 1971 and enrolled at the University of the North (Turfloop) in Limpopo Province to study law.

Christianity is the predominant religion in South Africa, and about 80% of South Africans are Christian.

Cyril Ramaphosa Parents And Family Ethnicity

Cyril Ramaphosa was born to his parents, Erdmuth and Samuel Ramaphosa, in Soweto, Johannesburg, on 17 November 1952.

Likewise, Ramaphosa’s parents are of South African and Venda ethnic backgrounds. Venda are South African Bantu people from the South African-Zimbabwean border.

His father, Samuel Ramaphosa, was a retired policeman, and his mother, Erdmuth, was a housewife.

Cyril rose to prominence as the secretary general of the National Union of Mineworkers, South Africa’s biggest and most influential trade union.

He was elected the ANC secretary general under ANC president Nelson Mandela in 1991.

Soon, Ramaphosa became the chief negotiator for ANC during the negotiations that ended apartheid.

He was believed to be Nelson Mandela’s preferred successor and elected chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly after South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994.

However, in 1996, Cyril resigned from politics to pursue a business career.

He became one of the most successful businessmen, becoming an owner of McDonald’s South Africa, a member of the board for Lonmin, and chair of the board for MTN.

After returning to politics, Ramaphosa found more success and was elected the fifth South African president.

Cyril Ramaphosa Wife And Children

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa is married to Tshepo Motsepe, a medical doctor.

Tshepo Motsepe is Cyril Ramaphosa’s third wife, whom he married in 1996. The couple is the parents of four children.

Motsepe is the daughter of the late Chief Augustine Butana Chaane Motsepe.

Her brother Patrice Motsepe is a famous South African mining billionaire who serves as the Confederation of African Football president. 

Tshepo’s sister Bridgette Radebe is the wife of African National Congress (ANC) politician and former Energy Minister Jeff Radebe.

Cyril’s first wife was Hope Ramaphosa, and the couple had a son. They married in 1978 and separated in 1989.

Ramaphosa’s second wife was businesswoman Nomazizi Mtshotshisa (now deceased), with whom he was together from 1991 to 1993.
