Shelton’s father, Bryan, a collegiate tennis coach, started coaching him when he was 12 years old and he started playing tennis frequently.

Shelton thought about competing in ITF Junior tournaments abroad when he was 16 years old, but his father strongly advised him against it, asking: “Why do you need to travel abroad when you’re not the best [player in the U.S.]?”

In the end, Shelton claims that his father’s recommendation to avoid competing in ITF Junior events overseas helped his tennis growth because he was not constantly on the go and had a routine.
