She is an equally famous Actress best known for playing Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame and the title character Sparkle Williams in the 1976 film Sparkle.

Irene Cara passed away in her Florida home on November 25, 2022. She was 63. The cause of her death is undisclosed. 

Irene’s publicist, Judith A. Moose, confirmed the death to Eyewitness News. “It is with profound sadness that, on behalf of her family, I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” Moose wrote.

She also asked for discretion as Irene’s family dealt with their loss. The publicist continued, “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films.

Moose mentioned that funeral services were pending, and a memorial for her fans would be planned at a future date.

She pointed out that Irene’s death cause was unknown and would be revealed upon the availability of information.

Her parents, Gaspar and Louise Escalera, welcomed Irene Cara Escalera into the world in The Bronx, New York City, in the United States.

Her mother, Louise, was a movie theater usher, whereas her Father, Gaspar, was a factory worker and retired saxophonist.

Irene was of Cuban ethnicity from her mom’s side and Puerto Rican from her dad’s, per Ethnicelebs. Gaspar also had African ancestry.

Irene was the youngest member of her family, with four siblings: two sisters and two brothers.

At the tender age of three, Irene was one of five finalists for the Little Miss America pageant. She started playing the piano by ear before seriously studying music, dance, and acting. Her first dance lessons were when she was five.

Her formal performing career started with singing and dancing on Spanish-language television. Her first TV appearances were on The Original Amateur Hour and Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show.

From 1971–1972, Irene was a regular on PBS’s The Electric Company as a member of the show’s band, The Short Circus.
