Luke Fickell and the Bearcats agreed on a contract extension on August 25, 2020, keeping him in Cincinnati through 2016.

According to ESPN, the $3.4 million contract included incentives such as $250,000 if the Bearcats make it to the College Football Playoff and the New Year’s Six Bowl, as well as $50,000 bonuses for a top-25 finish, the regular-season AAC title, and the victory in the AAC championship game.

Coach Fickell began his career after being let go by the New Orleans Saints while working as a graduate assistant at Ohio State.

As the defensive line coach at the University of Akron, he joined the coaching staff in 2000.

He returned to Ohio State in 2002 as the team’s new special teams coordinator and two years later were given the linebackers coach position.

He was appointed co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2005. In 2011, Luke Fickell was named temporary head coach due to a coaching scandal involving head coach Jim Tressel.

When the Buckeyes hired Urban Meyer in 2012, he went back to coaching linebackers and served as co-defensive coordinator.

On December 10, 2016, the Cincinnati Bearcats announced that Luke Fickell had appointed their new head coach.
