Michael Barratt is married to Dr. Michelle Lynne Barratt, and they live in League City, Texas, with their five children. Michelle has been a part of UTHealth since 1991.

She is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Community & General Pediatrics and the Division of Adolescent Medicine.

She is the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency program and oversees the Continuity Clinic experience.

Michelle also teaches MSIII topics such as Communication and Adolescent patient care each block. In 2015, she was selected to co-direct The Healer’s Art elective.

Michelle’s husband, Michael, contributed his life to numerous scientific research projects.

Throughout his career as an astronaut, Barratt has worked particularly in physiology and medicine.

He has also been involved in several experiments exploring the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body.

Barratt began his career at NASA Johnson Space Center in May 1991 as an aerospace project physician with KRUG Life Sciences.

He then worked as the manager of the Hyperbaric and Respiratory Subsystems for the Health Maintenance Facility Project of the abandoned Space Station Freedom.

In July 1992, he was appointed a NASA aviation medical examiner in the Space Shuttle Medical Operations.

Additionally, in July 1993, Barratt was part of a team of the first three Americans invited to witness the recovery of a Soyuz spacecraft.

Michael Barratt was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington, but he considers Camas, Washington, his hometown.

He was born to Joseph Barratt and Donna Barratt. Joseph and Donna live in Camas.

Michael’s hobbies and interests include spending time with his family, engaging in church activities, writing, sailing, and restoring and maintaining boats.

He attended Evergreen High School in Vancouver before earning his undergraduate degree in zoology from the University of Washington.

Afterward, he went on to earn his medical degree from Northwestern University. While Michael’s ethnicity is not known, he is American by nationality.

Having specialized in aerospace medicine, Michael worked as a flight surgeon for NASA.

He was instrumental in developing the space medicine programs for the Shuttle-Mir Program and the International Space Station before being selected as an astronaut.

The physicist served as a flight engineer in a long-duration mission to the ISS for the Expedition 19 and 20 crew.

Subsequently, in March 2011, Michael completed his second spaceflight as a crew member of STS-133.
